CCSV-Nepal wants you learn some Nepali words and phrases before you travel in Nepal. In the area where tourists visit they can speak English and communicate with you but the further away you travel from the main city, the less English is known. Knowledge of Nepali Language is great to intimate and experience the country better.

Nepali is the official language of the state, spoken and understood by 90% of the population. Multiple ethnic groups speak more than a dozen other languages in about 30 different dialects. Many in government and business offices speak English.

Nepali language is more difficult in terms of pronunciation, grammar and structure than English that contains 36 consonant alphabets and the written form is more complex with confusing vowels.

Pronunciation:

‘A’ as in U in HUT, ‘aa’ as the ‘AR’ in GARDEN, ‘e’ as the E in BEST, but longer ‘i’ as the I in SISTER, longer ‘o’ as the O in SOLD, ‘u’ as the U in PUT, ‘ai’ as the I in MINE, ‘au’ as the OW in COW.

Here is the sample structure how it differentiates with English:

I play Basketball. Is translated as Ma Basketball Khelchus.

Subject + Verb + Object changed to Subject + Object + Verb

Nepali greets you with Namaste! Along with hand being held together, Combined with a prayer-like gesture. It pronounced as (na-ma-stay) this means I worship the god in you. It also way of saying hello.
